Poetic Living

Classical Education and Poetic Living?

Let me start with a warning: It would be an error to think of Classical Education simply as a field of study, or a pedagogy, or something that is "given" to children. A classical education is much more than that. It amounts to a lifestyle––a paradigm that opens a child's awareness to a world that is true, and therefore, good and beautiful. Unfortunately, much is said about the true and the good with very little emphasis on the beautiful, or the delight it produces, or the state of joy it creates (in conjunction with virtue).

As a classical school leader, I devote much of my time to counteracting this tendency by developing workshops, discipline procedures, classroom management policies, and teacher training geared towards encouraging the pursuit of beauty: an environment of merriment and lightheartedness, and ultimately joy––or what I call: Poetic Living.

What is Poetic Living?

Poetic living is living creatively every waking moment of your life, whether you are just cooking or giving directions or drafting your next meeting agenda. Thus by nature it is an act you must choose to do as opposed to something that happens to you.

Every one can live creatively.

You do not need to be a painter or an opera singer. It’s as simple as choosing to make everything you do beautiful. This pursuit of beauty ultimately does two things: it enriches your life and it presents to others a gift that they might delight in by participating in your own pursuit of beauty. At heart, then, living poetically is about personal responsibility, giving to others, and gratitude.
